Nudibranchs ("naked gills") are the largest order of Sea Slugs with estimates of over 2000 species worldwide.

These beautiful jewels are among my favorite subjects to shoot. They are colorful, quite animated and are so diverse that I never get tired of them.

We'll often see hundreds of them representing eight to twelve species on a single dive in SoCal.

Not all of these are Nudibranchs, but they are all sea slugs.

  • This species of Dendronotus is currently unidentified.
  • Feeding on a white sponge, with fully extended buccal mass. First time I've seen this.
  • At the top of the wreck of the Sue Jac we found this sea cucumber with a tiny little Rosie hitching a ride.
  • At about 90 feet, this Clown Nudi was on top of a pile of debris, reaching out for something else to climb on.
  • This Tylo was on a dead run to get to some place else. Feeding on sulfur sponges gives them their unique color.
  • These always remind me of a plough horse under a blanket.
  • Camouflaged very well on the hydroids.
  • These Nudibranchs are often found very deep.
  • Clinging to the hydrocoral in a deep Monterey underwater canyon.
  • Mating pair of Cuthona.
  • Rare tiny Nudibranch out on a stalk.
  • Pair of Spanish Shawls together while one is laying their beautiful orange eggs.
  • Interesting local Nudibranch.
  • These giant pink Nudis bury themselves in the sand, feeding on pink sea pens.
  • Nudibranch hunters, following the slime trails of their prey.
  • This tiny blue Nudibranch was resting under a red urchin.
