Gallery: Wet: Scooter Fog Diving

These were shot on the Oil Rig Eureka, just off the coast of Los Angeles.

The water was very green at 117 feet. We were scootering to the far west-facing side of the rig (looking into the sun) when all of a sudden streams of small bubbles started pouring up from a seam in the steel pilings.

We recognized this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and Claudette, without hesitation drove her scooter directly into the fog, made a blind turn and slowly emerged from the billowing bubbles.

This Series is very special and will likely never be repeated again. Its one of those "right place, right time" moments.

I got off about 30 shots in about 4 minutes. These are some of my favorites.

  • You can see the powerful dive light just penetrating the fog.
  • A little more emerges.
  • The nose of the scooter emerges from the fog.
  • Most of the way out of the fog.
  • This shot really captures Claudette's enthusiasm to go back into the mystery fog so I could get some more shots.
  • On the outside of the bubbling Oil Rig, looking into the maelstrom.
